Houston Ballet’s Raymonda Brings Old-World Elegance to the Stage

This spring, Houston Ballet invites you into a world of romance, resilience, and radiant choreography with the long-awaited North American premiere of Raymonda — a grand, full-length ballet reimagined for modern audiences.

Running May 30 – June 9, 2025 at the Wortham Theater Center, this lavish production is what’s hot in Houston — and a must-see for anyone who appreciates breathtaking movement and timeless storytelling.

A New Take on a Classic Masterpiece

Originally choreographed in 1898 by the legendary Marius Petipa, Raymonda has long been considered one of the jewels of classical ballet. But this isn’t a museum piece — Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM has reworked the production with a fresh narrative lens and new choreography that retains the elegance of its imperial roots while injecting it with modern emotion and urgency.

Set during the time of the Crusades, the ballet follows Raymonda, a noblewoman torn between duty and desire — a timeless tale brought to life with sweeping musical scores and elaborate costume design. Think opulence, precision, and high drama — Houston-style.

Why This Production Matters

This isn’t just another night at the ballet. Raymonda is a major artistic milestone for Houston Ballet, showcasing the company’s ability to honor tradition while boldly pushing the boundaries of what's possible on stage. It also marks the first time this version of the ballet has ever been staged in North America — and it’s happening right here in Houston.

The production features a world-class ensemble of dancers, intricate sets, and the lush sounds of the Houston Ballet Orchestra performing Alexander Glazunov’s romantic score.
